New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha witnessed a major turmoil on Wednesday, with opposition leader Anand Sharma tearing up the inaugural address of President Ram Nath Kovind, where he compared Mahatma Gandhi to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.
Sharma said: “Gandhi ji has done a lot for the nation and his equation with Deen Dayal Upadhyaya was a big disrespect.” The names of Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were not even taken. ”
Supporting his colleague on this point, the leader of the Congress, Ghulam Nabi Azad, stated that the Center has been constantly despising the Nehru family.
The president, however, did not allow a discussion on the argument that he called it “irrelevant.”
Union Defense Minister Arun Jaitley said Congress raised the issue for the sake of television cameras.
“The Chair should be guided that zero hour can not run just for the benefit of television channels,” Jaitley said.
Earlier Tuesday, Azad fell heavily on Kovind for not mentioning the name of Nehru in his speech and said he should “rise above party politics”.
Reacting to criticism from Congress, Union Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Congress party is trying to impact Nehru’s stature by insisting that his name should be taken in every speech.
