New Delhi: Interior Minister Rajnath Singh and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj will brief leaders of opposition parties on the confrontation with China and the situation in Kashmir on Friday, official sources said.
Leaders of major opposition parties are being invited to the meeting in which the two top ministers will give a detailed presentation on the prevailing situation along the Sino-Indian border and Jammu and Kashmir and government action.
Before Monday’s parliamentary session, the government apparently aims to build a consensus to deal with its biggest neighbor on the issue of Kashmir.
In the latest fight, New Delhi has expressed concern that China will try to change the status quo in the India-Bhutan-Tibet triangle in the Doklam area of Sikkim, where Indian troops stopped road construction by Chinese soldiers. Stagnation in the
Doklam area near Bhutan Union tri during the last three weeks after a Chinese army construction party attempted to build a highway. Doka La is the Indian name for the region that Bhutan recognizes as Dokalam, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region.
In Jammu and Kashmir, seven pilgrims were killed by militants in the Anantnag district as they returned from the Amarnath cave sanctuary last Monday.
Four districts of the state – Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Anantnag – have been boiling since the assassination of Hizbul commander Mujahideen Burhan Wani in a meeting with security forces on July 8, 2016.
Seventy-six people, in addition to two policemen, were killed during the five-month riots in the Valley following the murder of Wani.
The riots resumed since April 9 in the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat.
Opposition leaders have been criticizing the government over the way it handled the China-Kashmir issue.
Vice President of Congress Rahul Gandhi had questioned the “silence” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on China and also met with the Chinese ambassador in India.
Gandhi yesterday accused Modi of pursuing policies that created space for terrorists in Kashmir.
He also claimed that the Prime Minister’s quest for short-term political gains from the BJP-PDP alliance in the state has cost the country dearly and has resulted in sacrifices of innocent Indians.
