Cincinnati: Indian tennis player Sania Mirza and Chinese teammate Peng Shuai crashed at the West Open and the 2017 Open in Cincinnati after falling into a straight sets loss in the semi-finals of the women’s doubles event here Saturday.
The fourth pair, who have performed well in the tournament so far, suffered a 4-6, 6-7 (6-8) loss at the hands of the Taiwanese-Romanian duo Hsieh Su-Wei and Monica Niculescu in a clash of Four last that lasted more than an hour and a half.
It should be noted that Mirza and Peng joined the start of the US Open Series. Last week, the Indochinese duo was forced to take a walk after reaching the quarterfinals in the Rogers Cup as the Chinese injured their knee.
In the men’s doubles event, Seventh seed Rohan Bopanna and Croatian Ivan Dodig also retired from the US Open warm-up event after suffering defeat against the Colombian-Italian team of Juan Sebastián Cabal and Fabio Fognini in the quarter-final clash.
After falling in the first set, Bopanna and Dodig recovered to win the second before going down to suffer a 1-6, 7-5, 7-10 loss to Cabal and Fognini and finally to leave the tournament.
With the duo existing, India’s campaign in the ongoing tournament also doubled.
