Has YSRCP chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy committed a mistake by approaching the High Court?
Jagan may be the leader of the primary opposition party in AP but he still needs approval from court to undertake any public campaign. Facing trail in innumerable economic offences, Jagan must attend Court on every Friday for hearings. He has to plan any political programme in accordance with these court-enforced restraints.
As Jagan is planning to undertake ‘Padayathra’ across AP from next month, he has recently appealed in the High Court, seeking exemption from appearing before the court in person on Fridays.
Since the CBI Special Court is hearing the disproportionate assets cases against Jagan, he should have ideally approached the same court for any sort of exemption. The politician however might have thought of forcing the CBI court to exempt him from personal appearance by getting an approval from the High court. But, as the Apex court had rejected his plea, he was forced to file a fresh plea in the CBI court, seeking exemption.
The CBI on Friday filed a counter in CBI court, opposing the petition filed by Jagan. The Bureau stated Jagan could not seek an exemption for political reasons. It reminded the court that the High Court had earlier rejected the accused leader’s plea stating that he could misuse the exemption in the name of Padayathra. The CBI also said that Jagan disrespected the court by planning the schedule of Padayatra without taking permission of the court.
Referring to Jagan first approaching the High Court, the CBI argues that the YCP chief should go to the Super Court after facing rejection from the High Court but not visit a lower court by altering a few terms in his plea.
Political analysts feel Jagan’s approach of High Court first and facing rejection may eventually prompt the CBI court to turn down his plea.
