A US lawmaker shot by an anti-Trump gunman in intensive care
Washington – Top Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise, recovered from being shot by a gunman angered by President Donald Trump, has been taken back to intensive care because of concerns about the infection, doctors said Wednesday.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center said the legislator is now in serious condition.
Scalise and three other people were shot in mid-June in a park in the suburb of Washington while practicing for a congressional charity baseball game.
The 51-year-old Louisiana player was hit in the left hip by a bullet from a high-speed rifle.
The round fragmented into hundreds of pieces and ripped bones, internal organs and blood vessels.
Scalise, the Republican number three in the House of Representatives, arrived at the hospital in critical condition, facing “an imminent risk of death,” according to doctors.
After undergoing multiple rounds of surgery, he was upgraded to a fair condition and moved to the ICU at the end of June.
The gunman, 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., Was shot to death by responding officers.
