punjabGurdaspur: Prime Minister Amarinder Singh assured farmers Monday that his government will soon implement the promised scheme to waive agricultural debt in about a month and urged them not to consider suicide or any other extreme step to escape Of their loan burden.

Speaking at Independence Day celebrations in Gurdaspur after deploying the national flag, the PM also announced the launch of a recruitment campaign for the government sector to fill all critical vacancies.

‘Rozgar Melas’ (Employment Fairs) would be carried out statewide to implement the promise of the job-finding survey, he said.

The debt relief plan will be implemented in about a month and the government will ensure that the farmers’ loans are paid, without needing any payment from them, he said.

Singh’s statement assumes importance as there are reports that struggling farmers in various parts of the state have ended their lives because of the debt burden.

The prime minister reiterated his determination to maintain order and law in the state at all costs, saying that his government was committed to zero tolerance for illegal activities, drugs, and armed gangs.

There has been a noticeable decrease in crime in the state in the last five months, he added.

Referring to the war on drugs, Singh said a Special Task Force (STF) formed for this purpose has been given a free hand, leading to registration of up to 6,018 cases under the NDPS Act so far.

A total of 6,933 people, including some police officers inciting such activities, had been detained and more than 97 kilograms of heroin recovered, in addition to other prohibited substances, he added.
