Barcelona: Spanish league refused to accept payment of Neymar’s 222 million euro ($ 260 million) bailout clause, a league spokesman confirmed on Thursday, which could delay the Brazilian world-wide move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.
“We can confirm that the legal representatives of the player attended the League to pay the clause and this has been rejected,” the spokesman told AFP.
The refusal of the league does not stop the departure of Neymar from Barcelona, since the money can be paid directly to the club. The payment of the clause would break the previous world record of transferring 105 million euros (then $ 116 million) that Manchester United paid for midfielder Paul Pogba last year.
The official spoke with the AP on condition of anonymity in line with league policy.
The official said that Juan de Dios Crespo, a Spanish lawyer representing Neymar, arrived in the league offices on Thursday, accompanied by three Brazilians, with the intention of depositing the purchase clause.
League president Javier Tebas told sports daily AS on Wednesday that the league believes the transfer violates UEFA’s financial rules.
