Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis qualify for WTA Finals
The Indian-Swiss women’s doubles pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis became the first team to qualify for the 2016 Women’s Tennis Association Finals, scheduled for October.
“Qualifying for the WTA Finals for the second year in a row with Sania is very exciting,” said Hingis, three-time WTA Finals doubles champion. “We enjoyed every moment in Singapore last year and hope to defend our title amongst the best doubles teams in the world.”
The No 1 ranked pair has already won five titles this year including the Australian Open.
“Winning the WTA Finals in Singapore last year as well as multiple tournaments in such a short period of time has been an unbelievable experience.
“I’m very much looking forward to competing in Singapore once again to try to make it three in a row,” Sania Mirza was quoted as saying by the Hindu.
The duo crashed out in the third round of the recently-concluded French Open, and this early qualification will hand them a much-needed confidence boost as they head into the Wimbledon.
