After dabbling with TV, acting and film production, Lakshmi Manchu is set to turn a singer. She crooned a song in her forthcoming film, Dongata, directed by Vamsi Krishna. Lakshmi completed the recording in four hours flat. “I think the simple lyrics made my job easy. Varikuppala Yadagiri wrote the song and almost everyone in the team felt that I should sing it. I casually sent the lyrics to music director Raghu Kunche to get his opinion and he pushed me to sing it. He believed I could sing (laughs),” says an elated Lakshmi.
Apparently, her dad Mohan Babu wanted her to become a playback singer and the actress is pleased about fullfilling her father’s wish after all these years. “While I was learning classical music, I could never hit the high note right and I thought I didn’t have it in me to be a singer. After going to the US, I learnt to work with my voice,” says Lakshmi, who was admittedly too shy to tell her father about her singing foray. “No! I was too shy. After recording for the song, I casually made him listen to it. He fell in love with it and immediately rang up Raghu Kunche and appreciated him, along with Vishnu and Manoj,” she says.
Raghu had unsuccessfully tried to get Lakshmi to sing Disturb chestunnade… Devudu Chesina Manushulu back in 2012 and now he is all praise for her. “The song has a heavy influence of teenmaar and she did a great job. We made sure that she felt comfortable while singing the song and didn’t stretch the notes too far,” says Raghu.
