Why did Jagan send a letter to Arun Jaitley?
The Goods and Services Tax will start from midnight on July 30 of this year. Except for West Bengal, all state governments have passed resolutions in favor of the GST.
However, most of the public’s representatives feel imposing Tax on the Handlooms industry is unacceptable. Why because, because it is an industry most of the people in the country depend on agriculture. Already, Handloom Workers are having a hard time seeing benefits and committing suicide as well. Now, imposing taxes on the material used for hand-made products will be a huge burden for weavers. If the tax sheet set by the GST Council is implemented, the Handlooms Industry will never be able to recover.
AP opposition leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy wrote a letter to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, citing realities about the Handlooms industry. He noted: “Many people are directly dependent on manual and indirect fabrics, and this industry will not survive if the tax recommended by the GST Council is imposed.” The materials used by weavers must be included in the list of products that attract a minimum tax slab A tax exemption should be granted for handloom products’.
